Tanner Foust takes Gold at X Games 13 for Rockstar Energy Drink Syms Racing Rally Team

Foust beats out last year’s medal winners Pastrana, Block and McRae for the win.

Rockstar Energy Drink Syms Racing Rally Team driver, Tanner Foust, took the Gold medal in the second running of the X Games Rally Super Special at the Home Depot Center Stadium in Carson California this Sunday August 5th. Tanner Foust, driving a Syms Racing prepared Subaru Impreza WRX STI, with co-driver Chrissie Beavis, won the tightly contested final against Subaru Rally Team USA driver Ken Block by less than a second. Foust earned his place in the final round by beating 2006 X Games Rally winner, Travis Pastrana, after Pastrana was disqualified for overshooting the final turn and hitting Foust just yards before the finish line. Both hotly contested races had the capacity crowd in a frenzy to the finish.

Foust met his Rockstar Energy Drink Syms Racing team-mate, Andrew Pinker, in the quarter finals. Pinker, the current Rally America series leader, clipped a barrier mid-race essentially disabling his steering. This gave Foust the win, but with true X Games spirit, Pinker had the capacity crowd on their feet as he drove for the finish at all costs bouncing off barriers and almost rolling his Subaru on re-entry to the stadium. The on track action, including former World Rally Champion and 2006 Silver Medal winner, Colin McRae, rolling his car again, made a spectacular closing event for the X Games and edge-of-the-seat television for the live ABC Sports broadcast.

Foust’s win was an upset against last year’s medal winning Subaru Rally Team USA of Travis Pastrana and Ken Block but a tribute to Foust’s multi-faceted driving talents as a championship leading drift car racer and Hollywood stunt driver, particularly given that he ran against both drivers with a broken emergency brake - essential in rally competition.
